Writing with clarity

Ladies what does the following mean to you?
"Beliefs and attitudes about African American female adolescents and women -from within the African Diaspora and outside- are interwoven with capability in intellect and undoubtedly their sexual positioning in public and private spaces. These representations have also affected the ways of knowing that African American females embrace, rebuff or find caveats in-between concerning their representation. '

I have been told twice that this paragraph is not clear. I need some feedback.

  1. Well, I am a bit confused by it too. Whose beliefs and attitudes about African American female adolescents are you referring to? And what are they interwoven with? What are you trying to say about how it influences their sexual positioning? Yup...I've read it a few times and still can't quite understand what you're trying to say. Do what I do sometimes? Step out of the academic way of writing and explain this like you're talking to someone who has never read any academic research before. Then maybe we can get a better idea of what you're trying to say and how to better state it.

  2. Welcome, Nuomicronnine! Could you try something like,

It is plausible that both intellect and sexual status influence beliefs and attitudes about African American females. These representations are applied to adolescents as well as adult women. They are also generalized to those from within the African Diaspora and those outside of it...

I don't think I know what you are trying to say with the last sentence, but perhaps breaking it up into 2 or 3 sentences and fleshing it out a bit more would help?
